About Us

Farrell-Ryan History

In 1935, brothers George and Bernard Farrell opened the Farrell Brothers Funeral Home on Lapham Street. Three years later they had a new building constructed at 51 W. Ridge Road. Over the years, many additions and modifications were made to the building and grounds. Most memorable to area residents was in 1975 when the old Maplewood Diner was razed to make room for additional parking.

When the Farrell brothers retired in 1973, the business was sold to long-time employee, Thomas Plumb. Mr. Plumb retired in 1986 and ownership was transferred to James J. Ryan, who had worked for the firm since 1978.

In 1988, Mr. Ryan formed a partnership with Gordon E. Smith, owner of the Younglove-Smith Funeral Home. Jim Ryan purchased that funeral home from Mr. Smith in 1990 and the name became the Younglove-Smith & Ryan Funeral Home.

Younglove-Smith & Ryan History

From its opening in 1926 to today, the Younglove-Smith & Ryan Funeral Home has grown and adapted to the needs of N.W. Rochester and the Town of Greece. The original owner of the funeral home, Mr. Harry Peters, conducted funerals from the Dewey Avenue location until his death in 1944. Mr. Charles L. Younglove then took ownership of the business and is credited with improvements that more than doubled the size of the original building.

Upon his retirement in 1971, Mr. Younglove sold the business to his former employee, Gordon E. Smith. In 1990, Mr. Smith transferred control of the funeral home to his partner, Jim Ryan.

The new funeral home at 777 Long Pond Road is a natural progression in our effort to keep pace with the ever-growing community we serve.
