August 19, 1952 — May 18, 2025

Rochester

Carol J. McElroy, of Rochester, New York, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends on May 18, 2025.

Born August 19, 1952, to William and Pam Gaenzler. She was the second of five children, and the eldest daughter, laying the foundation for her nurturing and loving personality.

After graduating from Greece Olympia in 1970, she worked at W. T. Grant Co, where she met her first husband, Robert McElroy. In 1977, they welcomed their daughter Keli, whom Carol showered with all her love, support, wisdom and much laughter.

Carol was devoted to her family. She compassionately cared for her parents as her father’s health was declining, and she proceeded to take care of her mother for the next 11 years with unconditional love and a generous heart.

Carol had a deep love of continuous learning in the area of holistic practices. She lived her life through those practices and was able to share her knowledge with friends and family. Carol was a fantastic cook. She always added her own flare that made the dish extra special. Carol could play the piano and had a beautiful voice. She loved singing at church.

After retiring from Lori’s Natural Foods in 2023, Carol worked part time at Chico’s in Pittsford, and focused her free time on her friends, family and spiritual education. Carol left an unforgettable impact on everyone she met, endlessly inspiring others with her bright smile, infectious laughter and unwavering kindness.

Predeceased by her parents William and Pam Gaenzler. Carol is survived by daughter Keli McElroy; sisters Debra (Jef) Craig and Bonnie Forbes; brothers William (Nancy) Gaenzler and Richard (Lori) Gaenzler; nieces Dana (Jon Champion) Marlowe, Zoey Gaenzler and Laura Gaenzler; nephews Devin Forbes and Tyler (Danielle) Gaenzler; and great niece, Johanna Chandler.
