Ernest A. “Ernie” Alo, a devoted husband, loving father, and treasured papa, leaves behind a family who will forever carry his love in their hearts. He is survived by his beloved wife and high school sweetheart of 57 years, Ann R. Alo; his son, Michael Alo; his daughter, Yvonne Watson, and son-in-law, Keith Watson; and the greatest joys of his life, his grandchildren, Sean Watson, Janie and Ella Alo. He is also survived by his sister, Franca Larizza, and brother-in-law, Joe Larizza; his sister-in-law, Maria Liberti; his many dear cousins, nieces, nephews, and Vince, a beloved member of the family. He is also lovingly remembered by Paul and Penny Watson, and by many cherished friends.

Ernie is reunited in heaven with his parents, Lina and Orazio (Natalino) Alo; his mother-in-law, Anastazia Reka; his brother-in-law, Joseph Liberti; and his treasured grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

Ernie was born on April 17, 1943, in San Lucido, Calabria, Italy, to Lina and Orazio (Natalino) Alo. His childhood took him from Italy to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, before he immigrated to the United States at age 16. His time in Rio de Janeiro remained dear to him throughout his life. He often spoke of the beauty of Copacabana Beach and carried with him a lifelong love of the ocean. Though he arrived speaking Italian and Portuguese, he fully embraced becoming an American citizen and worked hard to learn English. It was here that he met Ann, the love of his life. Their 57 years of marriage were built on love, family, faith, and a lifetime of shared memories. He also proudly served his country for seven years in the United States Army Reserves. His service was a source of great pride and reflected the deep respect he held for his country, duty, and the values he carried throughout his life.

A natural athlete, Ernie excelled in swimming, water polo, and soccer. He proudly wore number 10 for the Italian American soccer team, helping lead the Italian Americans to the 1963 United States Soccer Federation National Championship. He then went on to play professional soccer with the Rochester Lancers before starting a family. His love for the game never faded, and he remained a spirited fan of Brazilian soccer and the Dallas Cowboys. He had the joy of seeing Brazil win five World Cup championships and the Dallas Cowboys win five Super Bowls during his lifetime. He proudly passed his love for both teams on to his children and grandchildren, a cherished family legacy that will continue for generations to come. It feels fitting that his soul came to rest on the day his beloved Dallas Cowboys played in Brazil’s iconic Maracanã Stadium. A tender connection between the country he cherished and the team he loved.

For more than 30 years, Ernie worked at Eastman Kodak Company, where he was a respected supervisor. Many who worked with him remember him as a genuine and fair leader who always advocated for what was right. He was happiest outdoors, where his patience, pride, and eye for detail could be seen in every part of his yard. A master at landscaping, he kept a beautiful, impeccable home that was admired by neighbors and those walking by. He loved nature, especially the peaceful sound of birds chirping, and could whistle their beautiful songs with remarkable ease.

Ernie was a man who found joy in the simple and lasting things: his faith, his country, his family, and a home filled with the people he loved. He had the most magical blue eyes, sparkling like the ocean he loved so much. Nothing made him prouder than watching his children grow and succeed. Nothing brought him more happiness than being Papa. He adored Sean, Janie, and Ella and treasured the special place he held in their lives.

He was openly affectionate, never hesitant to say, “I love you,” and gave every hug and kiss with his whole heart. He told the truth, even when it was hard to hear, but always with love and unwavering support. He made time to listen and gave those he loved the space to make their own mistakes and learn from them, encouraging them always to “chase your dreams.”

He taught those who loved him not through grand speeches, but through his quiet example: by showing up, working hard, caring deeply, and loving without condition. He had a giving spirit and was always willing to lend a helping hand. His strength in the face of adversity was a testament to his strong will and perseverance. He was a steady presence, a source of comfort and strength, and the kind of man whose love was felt in the everyday moments that become the most precious memories.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dad’s care team at URMC, especially Dr. Amanda Morrison, Dr. Aditya Joshi, Dr. Carolina Marcus, and Dr. Frank Passero, for their unwavering commitment to his care and comfort. The family also extends its deepest gratitude to Ernie’s wonderful neighbors, who have gone above and beyond to carry on his legacy of caring for the yard he loved so much. Their kindness, friendship, and watchful care for Ann and the entire family have meant more than words can express.

The number 17 held a treasured meaning for Ernie and his family, and they will look for those signs from heaven as a reminder that his love remains close. As he so lovingly told his family, “Love is forever.” Ernie will be profoundly missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished by his family and all who were fortunate enough to know him.

We know the 1963 split-window Corvette you always wanted will be waiting for you in silver, with a dark blue interior. May the Good Lord welcome you with open arms and bring you comfort and eternal peace in heaven.

A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, October 7th at Our Mother of Sorrows Church, 5000 Mt. Read Blvd. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
