In Loving Memory of Joan L. Youngs
1957 – 2026
Joan L. Youngs, 69, of Waterford, CT passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Born Joan Lois Rice in Rochester, New York in 1957, she brought spark and a bright splash of color to everyone she met.
On June 27, 1980, Joan married the love of her life, Leland "Lee" Youngs, beginning a devoted partnership that would span 34 years until Lee's passing in 2014. They enjoyed camping, cheering on their favorite NASCAR drivers, and traveling to visit family, creating memories wherever they went. Together they raised their son, Jeffrey, who was a source of great pride and joy throughout their lives.
Joan began her career as an industrial painter in Rochester but realized her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse in 2006. Her warmth and dedication comforted scores of patients throughout her short but meaningful career in healthcare.
In retirement, Joan volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, continuing her commitment to helping others. As a Family Partner and mentor with Habitat for Humanity, she guided families through the process and helped them achieve the dream of homeownership.
She was also an active member of the Lucretia Shaw Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in New London, Connecticut, where she volunteered for numerous projects, including serving as a docent at several historic properties throughout southeastern Connecticut. Joan's kindness and welcoming spirit were evident in everything she did, and she found great joy in helping others.
Joan embraced life with creativity and enthusiasm. She was known for her love of music, her talent for crafts, and her deep affection for dogs, especially her dear Pepper. Joan's bright personality was perfectly mirrored in her signature colorful outfits, which brought cheer to every room she entered.
Joan is survived by her loving son, Jeffrey C. Youngs of New London, CT; four step-children, Robert “Bobby” Youngs of Arizona, Brenda Youngs, Meri Youngs, and Joy Fuller of Rochester, NY; her three siblings, Eileen Rice (Theresa Walker) of Chatham, NY, John Rice (Carol) of Wassaic, NY, and Cathy Grohocki (Paul) of Uncasville, CT; several step grandchildren and great grandchildren; as well as many dear nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles A. Rice and Helen M. Ennis; her beloved husband, Lee; and her brother, Stephen C. Rice.
Visitation will be held on August 17, 2026, at 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM concluding with a memorial service at 12:00 PM at Farrell-Ryan Funeral & Cremation Services, located at 777 Long Pond Rd, Rochester, NY 14612. Following the service, Joan will be laid to rest alongside her husband, Lee, at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery (2461 Lake Avenue, Rochester, NY 14612).
In honor of Joan’s memory, the family requests that donations be made to the Lung Cancer Foundation of America.
