Shirley Ann Mchail

November 16, 1927 — March 10, 2022

Shirley Ann (nee Frye) McHail of Rochester NY (Town of Greece) died at home, peacefully on March 10th 2022 with loving Family at her side. Shirley was born to Glenn Rossiter Frye and Clara Jane (nee McAleese) Frye in Brownsville, PA on Nov 16, 1927. She was predeceased by her loving, dedicated husband of sixty-five years, Rex. She is survived by her devoted children: Molly Ann (and David) VerSchage of Rochester, NY, Kevin (and Sonda) McHail of Harrison ID, Alice Ann McHail of Rochester NY, Rex (and Debby) McHail, Jr. of Fairfax VA, nine proud grandchildren: Nicole VerSchage (and Alex) of Roeland, KS, Katelyn VerSchage (and Jeff) of Rochester NY, Megan VerSchage of Rochester NY, Rachel (and Dillon) Halvorsen of St. Maries ID, Colleen (and Joseph) LaPlante of Fort Leavenworth, KS, Patrick McHail of Harrison ID, Daniel McHail (and Alison) of Eglin AFB, Steven McHail of San Francisco CA and Rex R. (and Danielle) McHail, III, great-grandchildren Brielle McHail, Marco McHail, Sean LaPlante, Clara LaPlante, Hannah Halvorsen, and Carl Halvorsen, nieces and nephews Bruce (and Chris) Cochran, Christy (and Tim) Nolan, Jerry (and Catherine) Frye, and Tracy Mohri.



Shirley earned her undergraduate degree in Education from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, then completed her student teaching assignment in Punxsutawney, PA. While teaching High School in Bolivar, PA she met and soon married Rex in 1952, moving to Washington, DC to start their family together. In 1959, the family relocated to Rochester, NY. Once her children were all in school, Shirley resumed her teaching career at Cardinal Mooney High School, where she enjoyed a long and successful professional tenure.



Shirley was devoted to her family, many close friends and she was committed to her Catholic faith. A long time member of Saint Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, she was active in numerous parish activities and support. Shirley loved to travel with her husband. Together, they visited many countries yet took the greatest pleasure exploring all across the United States and Canada. She welcomed the adventure of majestic mountains, the awesome vastness of deserts and plains, the diversity of lakes and rivers. She especially loved the sun and sand of ocean beaches. Shirley and Rex formed life-long friendships from their annual stays at the Villages of Seaport in Cape Canaveral, FL. Shirley often accompanied Rex to wood carving classes, contributing humor, camaraderie, support, earning the love and friendship of hundreds of carvers over the years. Shirley was an avid reader all her life, permitting her to travel and explore vicariously when mobility became a challenge. She maintained close, personal friendships through the "Mother's Club" gatherings and more. Shirley will be greatly missed by all who knew her.



There will be a Mass at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Greece, NY and a "Celebration of Life" on Saturday, May 7, 2022 9:30 AM with interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
