Listen to Obituary

Passed away May 14, 2026. Predeceased by her loving husband of 72 years James; parents Alfred and Beulah; two sisters Arlene Kincaid, Betty Hill; and numerous close friends. Survived by her children Arlene (James) Gashlin, Randy (Patty) McKnight, Douglas McKnight, Michael (Kris) McKnight, James (Victoria) McKnight, Jeanne (Patrick) Buckley; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several generations of friends.

Shirley was born in Rochester in 1930 and raised her family in the 10th Ward in true post war fashion. Mom was home, neighbors were family and everyone oversaw all the children. Later she returned to work, first as a bank teller, then a clerk in manufacturing, and then to her favorite job of all as receptionist at WXXI. Upon retirement she volunteered at the Maplewood Public Library where she was in her element. As a voracious reader, she surrounded herself with stacks of books wherever she was. Early on she taught herself and others to knit and then moved on to produce beautiful and intricate embroidery pieces. Throughout her life she was a force, little but mighty and never to be underestimated. She loved porch sitting to see what was going on, dancing whenever she could, and family gatherings that keep growing.
